Dad had his first registered Hereford bull sale at his ranch in 1973. After the sale was over, and the dust had settled, three bulls had been sold to a Ron Wall from Chadron, Nebraska. There was no such man, and yes, the bulls had been sold to the "wall" alright. :roll:
 
Sure nice to see old R R Rito 707 appearing on the papers or just a couple generations back on those sires and dams of the top selling bulls... And the old Jorgenson bred cows there too...

That's picking a pretty large outlier out of the group. That calf gained almost a pound a day more over his lifetime than most everything else in the sale. I'm not denying the bulls are fed hard, Schaffs are paid well to feed them that hard. Why would they change now?

Just because the cattle are raised in that environment doesn't mean that is the only environment they work in.

I realize they are paid well to feed them hard, that's obvious, but does that make them the best Angus bulls in the world? Wouldn't their genetics be just as good if they were fed grass hay and 5 pounds of corn? Wouldn't they be more fit to do their job if they weren't falling apart in the real world? Wouldn't the buyer know better what kind of females the bull would sire if the cow had to do the work? Having said all that I'm a capitalist, they are producing a product and their product is in high demand. They are living the American dream and I'm happy for them.

I don't know why I'm getting so worked up, I have no horse in the race, I've never bought a bull there and I never will. It just seems so artificial to me. I'm done, I'm sure they're worth every penny. :???:
 
Big Swede in theory you are 100%correct about the feeding. The proven fact, not theory, is when people buy bulls they buy the big fat ones. If everybody buying bulls wanted them in range ready condition when they walked off the truck,there would be a lot of that type being sold. I am afraid that if you tried that with a hundred or so bulls you would lose a very large chunk of money.

One method of determining the growth genetic potential of bulls is by observing the "Ratio" within their Contemporary Group.

The bigger the contemporary group the better.

If everybody buying bulls wanted them in range ready condition when they walked off the truck,there would be a lot of that type being sold. I am afraid that if you tried that with a hundred or so bulls you would lose a very large chunk of money.

I was being a little sarcastic with the prairie hay ration but my point was they don't need to be fed that hard from the day they are born. Northern Rancher once made the comment, "they're cows not sows."

Big Swede I agree with everything you've said. My only point was if I was getting cut that check every year to feed the way they do, I would be doing the same thing they are.

Big Swede I agree with everything you've said. My only point was if I was getting cut that check every year to feed the way they do, I would be doing the same thing they are.

You're absolutely right, I agree with you 100%. This issue reminds me of the frame score race back in the 80's. The biggest bulls won Denver so what did everyone do, try to keep up. Now these guys are pushing for 1600 pound yearling weights, so what does everyone do, try to keep up. Neither one of these scenarios are good for the industry in my opinion. But I guess people love extremes. Maybe some day enough of these fatties will fail and we will moderate again.
 
Back to the SAV sales results. One of the buying team of the 175,000
Special Bull. Asked for and received free semen from a non SAV
Bull just before the SAV sale. I guess they were saving up for the Special event in St Anthony
 
It takes a willing seller and a willing buyer to make a market sale and always will. There is a market for all types of animals but the size of the market is quite different. I guess we all look and see which market is the best for us to sell in. We mostly passed up the longhorn and the grass finished market ,but there are a few that make a very good living at it. I guess what I am saying is I doubt if many people want someone else to tell them the best way to spend there money :cowboy: When the mkt. drys up for those growthy fat bulls, they will quit raising them or sell them on the rail.
 
The market pays the price, SAV supplies the demand. Every year we read the same thing. I say,..... Good for SAV, they fulfill a niche.

I will give them this though, even if they are fed hard in St Anthony the genetics are there to provide something that is substantially better than some of the race horse bulls people are using around home.

Lot of genetic similarity in the origins of both SAV and OCC herds. Just took different paths after the starting point.

Not advertising for Pharo- but I do agree with some of his ideas of raising cattle- where I don't with S A V...
Everybody has different management circumstances- and often its personal preference and maybe somewhere in the middle of the two lies the ideal...

But I know personally living in the semi arid area we do and without a corn crib on every place- much of the Pharo thinking/management works better for us than does the S A V...
