Losing faith

Had 4 on Monday. One on Tuesday, Three yesterday and 2 more today. I think there is 23 left to calf. There is 12 more days left in this month so if the will average 2 a day I will be done before April first. Hmmmmm April first is April fools day. I think I am going to be in trouble.....

I got a black whiteface calf out of a Hereford cow this morning. Back before I bought them (there was 2 Hereford cows) the vet told me these 2 would have black calves. I asked how he could tell the color with his arm up their rear. He replied that he knew the people who brought them in and that they have black bulls. Another Hereford who had a calf a couple days ago had what we call a red neck calf. The only white on it is the face. Most likely a red Angus cross. Three other black calves this morning. 8 days left in March and 14 cows yet to go. If the keep up the pace they have been going at we might make by the end of the month.

Strange things can happen with baldy cows. One I know produced a champion Hereford steer.
We had one that produced a solid red calf. We kept her, we named her Cincinnati Red. She was a great cow for a long time. She was our 'marker cow' in a herd of Black Angus.

Here is the Hereford cow with a black calf. Fourth trip out there it is definitely her calf. And the Hereford cow which the vet said she would have a black whiteface calf. He was right about the color but off by about a month and a half on the calving date.

Ended up with 6 new calves today. I think the girls got the message. Now if we can get the message to the vets next year. The extra month does make a difference in the weight come fall.

Hopefully the Hybrid vigor makes them grow fast. I like the speckle faced calf.
They don't look like to bad of cows, they're doin the best they can for you. 🙂

Well they aren't all winners and they aren't all losers. The secret to success is to have the winners out number the losers. And to be truthful I don't post pictures of the losers. But as B says, despite our best efforts we can't kill all of them.

Hey Webfoot. Cows look pretty good. Are you giving them mineral?
Thanks. If they look good it is no fault of mine. They have been eating Rain and Wind at a rate that comes out to be about one ounce per cow per day. A 50 pound sack about every 10 days. They have been getting around 28 pounds of grass hay a day. There is a little bit of green popping up. They are sure chasing the green.

I thought I would post a picture of a loser. Not a close up picture. The single cow on the far left of the second pictureis a loser, She looks like death warmed over. I have to feed her over there by herself. If one other cow walks over there she just walks away. That happens everyday. She doesn't have enough milk to raise a goat. We have had to supplement her calf with a bottle a couple of times a day. That calf thinks the quad is its mother. Really, it crawls in under the fenders searching for another nipple. I would just haul the cow to the sale but I worry that she could take the ride in the trailer.
Notice the first picture the rest of the cows have no problem eating together

Here it is April 1st. I can't hardly wait for an update from Webfoot on how "our", meaning everyone here on ranchers, group of cows did. 🙂

According to my less than reliable notes there is 11 left to calf. Had 2 yesterday. None today. One of yesterdays was the last Hereford cows. She had a black whiteface calf. Only one straight Hereford calf out of the 5 Hereford cows. Several of the ones left to calf look like the could calf at any time. Several of the others look like they will calf in about July. But experience has taught me the ones looking close will take forever and the ones looking far off from calfing will surprise you.

Ain't that the truth!!
So the 'one and done' cows worked pretty darn well.

Two new ones today. So 9 left to go. After feeding I noticed a calf who hadn't got up. Went and checked him. He was breathing awfully hard. Got a shot of Draxxin in him. He died this afternoon. Took a piece of big bale twine. A loop around his neck and the other end to the quad. Slowly drug 300 yards out of the field, across the bridge, and into the corral with the upset cow following along making lots of noise. I will let her settle down. And tomorrow morning there is a bottle calf in the barn who is up for adoption.
