For some reason today I remembered riding at a college rodeo at Montana State in the spring of 1971. I was in the bareback which of course is the first event. I was the first gunner out. Reg Kessler had the stock. For those who didn't know him, Reg was a very large imposing man. I was a wet behind the ears 19 year old kid. Reg came over to me and explained in rather colorful language that his rodeos started on time and that I better be ready to go. Not knowing how to answer I just replied, "make sure the judges are here." He nodded his head and stalked off to find the judge. The grand entry left out a gate about 20 feet in front of me. As the last horses butt cleared the gate I nodded my head. The place erupted. The only time I ever heard the crowd while riding. I was so shocked that I fell off.
If I could remember their names there people you probably know riding there that day. Bobby Schall for one. Keith Maddox who later revived American hats. Our old buddy OT was there riding for Northern Montana Havre. There was a saddle bronc rider from Sun River whose name I have seen in the cattle business. For some reason 55 years later I don't remember their names.

Bobby Schall would be hard to forget. Old "Ironhead."
He could have been a world champion if not for his temper.
He was a great hand, exceptional really.

With the young steer wrestlers that he mentored at his home arena, he would run down the arena on foot with them every run.
He was tough!!!

You had some fun company.
