Jinglebob is busy

You guys all stay safe. I sure don't want to hear of any of you getting hurt. Hopefully we can get some rain but it don't look too promising. It is cooling off here at night now but it is a long time until the snow flies.

Nope Tumbleweed came out ok. Got pretty close. Smalltime lost three quarters of his summer range.....Oh well there wasn't any water there anyway. Didnt get that damned thistle though. Dad is gonna have to go out and spray in the middle of a burned out area  . All of us spent time out fighting it. We were lucky the wind did turn the other way a little and we caught a break, or we could have lost it all. Most physical excercise I have had since I had the baby.

Got some pictures of it on the digital camera maybe can get some loaded up when I get highspeed next week.

(whoops Tumbleweed we must have posted at the same time, you are more eloquent anyway :D )

Be careful everyone, nothing is scarier than fire :x

I'd rather face a fire than my wife when she gets mad and start shakin'!

I was down south at that one yesterday and today. They were talking that it doubled in size when it went south. I visited with one of the land owners and they are talking anywhere from 40,000 to 60,000 acres burned. Just talk and it ain't offical.

There is an owner on the west side who just bought a big chunk and he wasn't running many cattle on it, saving it for wildlife so he can come and hunt (he lives out of state). He ain't got near as much feed left for the wildlife and several guys talked about huge bucks that came out of the burned area and headed for the unburned area(where this guy doesn't own any land) so maybe his plan didn't work out so well.

I was visiting with my yerarling guy this evening and he said they were looking at a ranch in Nebraska that a guy wanted to buy and just save it for wildlife and hunting, but the state wouldn't allow it as they wanted the forage at least partially grazed down, to slow up fires. I'd never heard of this before and if we have a law like this, I've never heard of it.

I hate to tell anyone what to do with their own property, but there might be some merit in making people who don't live in the area and who aren't going to be around to fight the fires on it, to at least have to come up with a certain size of a fire guard around it, so as to slow down these fires.

I hate any new laws, but when you have a big bunch of tinder and there is no one or only one guy on a huge property to protect and defend it from fires, it might be something to think about. There were sure a lot of people there the last 3 days working to save this guys feed. I hope he appreciates it. He has awful good neighbors, whether he knows it or not.

JB, I headed up your direction on Thurs and didn't quite make it. My truck got a short under the dash and almost had a fire of my own going! I broke down just up the hill from where the local fire truck blew the rad hose! I caught a ride to the fire east of the little neighbor gal's place and came home with my neighbors.

When we got home I took my pickup water tank over to this big fire to the west of me and stayed all night. I did catch a few winks in the pickup. Left about 8 AM to come home and check stock water for my neighbor and myself. Never made it quite home. Refilled my water tank at the neighbors and went back when I saw the smoke flare up again.

The fire stayed about 5 miles from me but it sure has been spooky. I was on 34 when the fire jumped the highway. My neighbor owns the old Air Force LCF. There were 5 "loaner"sheep in there that I give credit for saving the place. Between the asphalt parking lot and the sheep keeping things grazed down close to the building and garage it saved the place. I sat out the fire passing through there in the pickup with the windows rolled up on the asphalt driveway in the front of the gate. Was the hottest and smokiest thing I have ever been through!

To my knowledge the only structures burned have been old sheds and old mobile home where my uncle used to live. It's a miracle that no one has been seriously hurt or lost their home. Lots of summer and winter pasture and hay has been lost along with miles and miles of fences. As bad as it is things sure could be much worse. So I guess we need to remember to count our blessings!

Never thought we'd see sheep praised on Ranchersnet.
We're glad you all are okay.
