    Spring is in the air

Daffodils blooming in the flower bed. The apricot tree in the back yard is in full bloom. Fresh snow this morning on the hill just a little above the house. Yep, sure signs of spring here in Baker County.

    Calving season

I had 3 calves today. For my neighbors that would be a very slow day. But I only have 60 cows. That means 5% of my cows calved today. The neighbors might have beat me by shear numbers. But today I win the percentage!!! Old #12 with the third calf of the day.

    Hired help

Here is my co pilot and navigator all set to feed the cows this morning. Hungry cows volunteering to help me unload the hay. The co pilot got on the back to make sure any cows stay back a respectful distance. Stealing hay or rubbing on the truck is not allowed by the co pilot.

    NFR news

Stetson Wright is turning out the rest of the NFR. He has a damaged hamstring muscle that was damaged previously to the NFR. Already had surgery scheduled for after the NFR. After falling off his first three head a decision was made. Not an easy on him decision when he was sitting in first place...

    Smoke

It is pretty smokey here today. The BLM had some contractors cut several hundred acres of Juniper a year and half ago. They went through with looked like giant log skidders with a grapple on the front. They pile them where the ground was flat enough to get around. Well today they are burning...

    Once Again

The wolves attacked. This time it my next door neighbor. They chewed on 3 calves. None dead but I asked and was told one might make it. This is the second incident so fish and wildlife will issue a kill permit. I believe we need to kill every one of them.

    Waiting

Waiting for more knowledgeable people to show up. There is 111 weaned calves in the front field. Took the dogs for a walk out the driveway. Found a dead calf and another walking very poorly. Dead one has been eaten on. The slow walker appears to have hide missing and blood up between the...

    Mutton Bustin

I have a grandson who won the mutton bustin at his local rodeo. Won a nicer belt buckle than they gave away for riding broncs 50 years ago. Picture of him shows him sitting upright with one hand in a rope like the big boys. He told his dad that now I know how Stetson Wright feels. Dad replied...

    Pendleton Roundup

Farm Credit gave us "customer appreciation" tickets to the round up for today's performance. I am not sure how much I appreciate them. Two hours driving each way, $20 to park and 4 hours sitting on those hard grandstand benches. My rear end may never be the same. They also gave us a $15 each...

    Stampede

There is 117 freshly weaned calves in my corral. During the night something must have spooked them. It could have been a cat, or the neighbors dogs, or who knows. That many calves all trying to get through an 8 foot opening on the run at the same time just doesn't work. They snapped off an older...

    Sound of Freedom

If you haven't seen the movie Sound of Freedom I would encourage you to go to it. When the credits start to roll at the end there is a small block in the corner that says a special message and it scrolls down the time until it plays. It is worth waiting on to see. We had to drive to La Grande...

    Bee sting

Yesterday I was getting something out of the chain box on the front of the flat bed trailer. I found a bee nest in there. Or I should say the bees found me. One sting on the right index finger. It was a hot one. So I made a baking soda paste which took the sting away. No more sting but it...
