Trailer floor replacement

Need to replace floor in stock trailer. Douglas fir is available. Apitong(sp) is suggested, but is very expensive.
Not sure what other types of wood are available here on the coast. We have cedar but have not heard of it being
used that way. Hemlock ? White woods seem to rot rather quickly. Any suggestions ?

Douglas Fir would be the best wood readily available. Definitely not Hemlock or other white wood. Suggestion? If the trailer needs a new floor you need a new trailer. My recommendation would be a Wilson aluminum. It will hold up to the west coast weather. You will never need another trailer. And 20 years from now it will still be worth what you paid for it maybe more.

I didn't get a Wilson. But after my other little trailer deteriorated, I did opt to get an aluminum by Circle J.
Bought it 10 years ago and it is holding up much better.
Appreciate your input on the flooring too.

 

[Faster horses]

Cottonwood is good flooring too, believe it or not. It is a short-grained hardwood.
After we had our tornado in SW Mt, we had 500 cottonwood trees on the ground.
So we took some to a mill and had them cut into slabs 3 x 12" x 12'.
We put them in the horse barn where the manger was and
where we saddled the horses. They never wore down from the horses hooves after a great
number of years. Worked really well in that application.

Replaced the trailer floor last summer. Used doug fir. I have mats that go in the trailer. I always like to put hay on the mats to help absorb moisture and to try and minimize splatter. Are there any type of wood chips/shavings that might work better than hay and not damage the aluminum ?
