Can you show or explain the bottom hinge a little more? I've got lots of dead straight spruce and 2, 10 foot gaps that need gates. These would look cool.

bottom hinge is just a 1 inch strap of steel there is a large angle iron bolted above the strap to keep it from slipping to that side of the post.
