Montana Auctioneer Sells Bulls In Russia

It's not everyday that a past World Champion Livestock Auctioneer from our region becomes the first American to sell bulls by auction in Russia.

But that's exactly what happened last week to Joe Goggins of Billings, Montana.

This week Russell Nemetz caught up with Joe at the Public Auction Yards and asked him about his trip.

In addition to his wife Linda, others making the trip with Joe were Bill Davis, with Rollin' Rock Angus of Sidney, MT and Eldon and Louisa Krebs with Whitestone-Krebs Angus of Gordon, NE.

Joe says the bulls he sold were actually from Whitestone-Krebs genetics and it turned out to be quite an event.

He says Russia has huge potential when it comes to the beef cattle business.

Joe say unlike many in this country, the people of Russia know what it's like to be hungry and that's why their government is getting behind this program.

And he says in addition to actual infrastructure, the other hurdle the Russians will have to overcome if they're to become a player in the global beef business is human labor. If it's ever going to happen, he says the Russians will have to depend on Americans in this area too.

i'd put Seth ahead of Lynn any day of the week and twice on Sunday. i do like Odden, but haven't heard him for years. but if i was going to a bull sale and could choose the auctioneer, i would go with Goggins first, then Seth or Ty, after that it wouldn't matter much.

IMHO Brant Hurlbert is definetly #1, from the auctoneers I've heard. Did anyone ever see the movie "The Jack Bull"? In that movie if you listen close Brant's dad Ken (great guy) is auctioning as they drive the horses up to the out doors auction ring in Wyoming Territory. He was great to listen to, with a great sense of humour.
 
I like Roger a lot better than Joe...Joe gets "rolling" and sometimes forgets to stop....And a lot of older folks and folks with hearing problems can't understand Joe...I used to have an old fella (now departed) that would sit beside me at the sales Joe was selling when he was needing to buy bulls so he could ask me what the price was at- because he said with his hearing aid it was just one big blur....

Garth Isbell is another Montana auctioneer I like to listen to- and has always seemed a straight shooter instead of aiming for the rafters..

I agree that Joe is hard to understand for us older generation, while
Roger is really easy to keep up with.

Same with Lynn Weishaar, he goes too fast...

i guess i never considered Goggins hard to keep up with or understand. :???: but Lynn is very, very hard to understand at times. for me Jacobs isn't as smooth as some of the others, but he is easy to understand. IMO
 
I could sit and listen to Joe Goggins sell bulls all day long. His chant is very awesome. From a buying aspect Roger Jacobs is simple to understand and follow.

I have always said that if you are selling.... you want Col. Lynn Weishaar doing it because he makes you money. He can take over a sale and jump the average by thousands. If you are buying....you have to work to listen and keep track of where he is at. I think it by design because he goes so fast you either bid or get left behind. He lets no grass grow.

His son Seth has really become a great auctioneer. For both parties involved.

I have always had a question for you bull sellers. I know auctioneers usually work for a commission but at a sale that brings in millions (Schaff Angus Valley for example) do they get the commission or just a flat fee?

Just curious.
 
I have bought bulls from Rodger he's pretty good. Brent Carey is a good PB auctioneer. Bruce Switzer has sold lots of cattle up here commercial and PB he's good. Jim Wilson from Maple Creek is good.

As a kid I wanted to be an auctioneer because of Jay Blackmore from Davidson. He's about the first one I remember.
