I personally think that if the goverment thinks that the animal ID is such a great thing for all the livestock raisers, growers, dealers or just hobby farmers, way shouldnt they have to implant and tag all their animals too. That way, they could track all their prarie dogs. They can come out here and tag their 200 or so antelope and all their whitetail deer. I hear them say that all the deer and antelope are not theirs, but shoot one, where do you end up. In a court house paying a fine and maybe pokee time. It must be their animals, if they can dish out the fines. Hit one with your truck and they say not our deer, pretty much tough luck for you. Personally I think it would be nice to see all the deer wearing pretty little pink tags. Maybe its just me thinking this way.

I like the way you think diesel.

Me too....

It sure is odd that the wildlife belongs to the state until we hit one and wreck our vehicle, then it's our problem.

They are also ours to feed and we have to fix the fences they ruin without any compensation from the "real owners".

And then we're supposed to allow GF&P to trespass at will across our pastures, without our knowledge or consent, to check out a hunter that we've given permission to be there.

Don't get me started....

I got a buddy who roped and tagged and antelope once. Needless to say they were ' driving drunk' on their horses that late PM.

Seemed the Game guys took a pretty dim view of that when a tagged/branded antelope got reported!!

Who's responsible if one of your cows is hit on the road ??

So you are the real owner huh ?? The deer and antelope were grazing your grass before you were born, grew up and fenced it in. I always considered they belonged to the man upstairs along with the grass and water that we all paid to call ours. And I hope the deer and antelope will still be grazing your grass when you and your grandchildren have that wonderful reunion in the grate range in the sky.

If the road isn't marked with signs announcing that it is open range, I am responsible and liable for any resulting vehicle damage if I can't prove that I have honestly tried to keep my livestock off the highway.

I'm the real owner of this ranch and any other livestock owner, with the exception of the state, grazing on my grass pays me for the privilege. Why should the state not pay their own feed bills instead of telling me that I have to provide free grass and hay for their livestock?

According to the law, you considered wrong. The wildlife is owned by the public, not by God.

I talk to God often to help me solve problems. Talking to GF&P is usually an exercise in futility.

.

I guess states differ in their law. In our state livestock have the right- of - way except on State highways, unless you have received a warning about your livestock being out. So, if someone hits my cow they are responsible for her and damage to their vehicle.

In regard to who own the wildlife I guess I'm open minded about that. But, if the public owns them ....... oh, never mind, I agree with NR that would be opening up another can of worms. :)

I dont have anything against a deer, they just look so good hanging on the wall, or on a fence or gate some wheres. True, they were here first, but when I supply the grass and hay all year long, why cant they at least give the land owner a few tags free for all the hassle they cause. It would not be bad for the deer to come into the stackyard and eat, but they crap and crawl all over my best alfalfa and then I expect my cows to have to eat it after a cronic wasting deer has been all over it. Heck Ill even fab them a portable chute system to tag all their deer and antelope so they can keep track of their movement, just as they want to do with my cattle.

One really bad winter here, they got into our haystacks and made a big mess. We took pictures and notified Mt. Fish, Wildlife and Parks. We
thought it would be nice if they compensated the rancher some for feeding them. After all, they need to eat too.

What they did, was open up another season on deer.
Ridiculous. They don't care about anything except their own
funding.

In Illinois landowners get free tags.. Each owner can get up to 2 for black powder, two for gun and two for archery (At least the last time I checked)... But if you have 3 or 4 family members living on thef arm than each person in the family can get those tags, up to something like 1 every 40 acres or something like that since our deer population is pretty darn dense in this area, (Not like southern Illinois though which has more deer than people I think)

Besides that they offer depredation hunts some times during the year for crop damage but that program is ripe with curroption on the land owners part. They generally ask if you allow hunting on your ground at that point and if you don't they kindly suggest that you allow some folks on your ground.. Of course, here in the this lovely state we have such stinking liability issues with laws that protect landowners in this case constantly getting challenged and overturned that to some, the deer eating 5-10 bucks an acre worth of feed is better than a hunter tripping on a fence, shooting off his foot and suing you for 4 million dollars while tresspassing on your land.... And winning the case.

I just talked to dad about this last night.

The tag, I mean..... we have to pay just as much as a city slicker that ahsnt ever even seen a days worth fo weork in the field :s

Feeding deer is just a cost of owning the land. I agree that the landowner shouldn't have to pay to hunt them, here you can hunt small game with out a licence.
