Gotta wash my Carhartts, but hate to...

I need to wash my Carhartt jacket and coveralls, but hate to since they never seem to keep me as warm once I do it. Any ideas? Would scotch guard help?

What i want to know is how you know you need to wash your Carhartt's?

Won't the dogs get in the tractor with you anymore?

Yeah I agree........ You wash them suckers and I will guarentee you the cows will disown you... My coveralls that I wear for calving just stand in the corner so I can jump right in em..... And the cows think I'm one of them.......  Ya I'm kinda full of it today.....

If your Carhartts smell worse than your pickup, it's time to wash. I always enjoyed scraping the most obvious goodies off of my overalls with a pocketknife while drinking coffee. Makes me look contemplative, I think...

Maybe the dogs don't want me in the tractor with them anymore...  . The bigger issue is that I don't want them in my house anymore  .

I've never bought Carhartts full price, Cheyenne has a Sierra Trading Post, and back in the bargain barn, you can find them very cheap. Maybe I should just throw these out and buy new, but I hate to not get every last bit of use out of them :-) .

And yes Lilly, I wear Cuddle Duds too, and they are really nice! :D Perhaps my most favorite find recently are Wild Rags by Lois... they're very nice, and come in great colors... it never hurts to accessorize your grungy coverall outfit    .

I've washed mine a few times, hasn't been a problem for me. I use them where I need the toughness. But when I need real cold protection I switched to military ECWS (Extreme Cold Weather System). It's a series of layers that you use based on conditions. It's also the same base layer system that Cabelas sells, but of course they charge more. I have Generation I or II which you can find in the surplus stores. There's a thin mapping polartec layer, a thin polypro, a heavier polypro, a fleece layer then the Gore-Tex. All of these are in both the top and bottom. The Gore-Tex has no insulation, it's just a protective shell. From 20 degrees and up I'm usually fine with just the heavy polypro and gore-tex. Below that I'll use the polartec and thin polypro as well. Down below zero I may add the fleece layer. One key is you don't wear any cotton. Wearing the poly pro layers with the carhartts will be OK as well. You're working against yourself if you wear jeans and a t-shirt as a layer. Hooded sweatshirts are no good either, cotton. What I really don't like about my Carhartt cold weather bibbs is the bottoms get wet with the snow and freeze. The ECWS system is also much more comfortable and you have more freedom to move.

Wyoming,so true, why throw out those coveralls till thier hanging off ya',i live in my Carhart bib.Have'nt seem much problem with washing them, cept' those oil stains don't seem to wash out.

Glad to hear you can get by washing them without ruining them. I think the problem I have is that they lose some ability to block the wind after washed... and it can get a tad breezy up here at times   :D .

Thanks for the tips :D .

I wash mine a couple times a year, but do NOT dry them. I hang them up and let them airdry. I think that's the key to it all -- we're plenty breezy here and nothing gets through my heavy Carhartt bibs...washing em would be basically the same as getting them wet with snow and letting them airdry...I think the dryer is what breaks down the material and allows the wind to break through.

I think you're onto something, that makes sense to me :D. I'll give it a try, and let you know.

I use to wear Damart Long Johns even tho it doesn't get that extremely cold down here. They always advertised them as what the NFL players wore. They were thick like a sweatshirt but had some kind of silky material inside. Other than being bulky they were worn.....don't know if they even make them any more.

I don't have any ideas on how to make them warmer, but I have found that Walls brand outerwear is alot warmer and about 2/3 the price of Carharts. I have a Carhart hooded jacket for chores and a Walls jacket for going to town and there is no comparison. The Walls has much more insulation and is just as tough .

I never thought about it until I read this , but my favorite coat is a Walls, Mountain. I have had it several years and wear it every day. My wife throws it in the washer every chance she gets. It is tough and warm.

I loved my Walls jacket until the zipper did what it did, and I had to try and get that thing off over my head with the zipper broke and the deally majig up at my neck.

It was stuck...I was stuck....and tryin like all git out...to git out of it. Not fun! But I keep contemplatin puttin a new zipper in it.

  I am sooooooooo mad.... Bought my son a pair of Walls and zipper broke after a week of wearing.......  Just burns me up to pay alot for coveralls and have the zipper break..........
P.O.ed big time!!!!!
