Boy the wind came back up and the temp went into the -20's windchill factor again this afternoon...
I came in this afternoon and checked the internet- not much on here or any of the sites I normally check out- except for the normal political bickering of PB...But it got me to thinking (dangerous thing for me   )-- how much knowledge and education is promoted by the internet- and even the BS sites like this one and some of the others I frequent...

Ranchers.net besides being almost like a big community provides folks with all types of info on machinery, tractors, vehicles, cattle, horses, dogs, differing opinions on the industry, etc. etc. (almost any subject you want to discuss)- but also gives us a countrywide/world wide daily geography lesson with all the pictures and weather reports...Parts of the world and ways of doing things I've never seen- and probably wouldn't elseways...
And we have the expertise of a cross section of folks with years involved with breeding and segments of the cattle/Ag industry- and their differing opionions on how the news of the day will effect the industry or their segment of it...

Cattletoday is much the same but more centered toward southerners and the back 40 hobby farmers...

The Advantage Cattle Services site has a lot of info on cattle- especially angus cattle-and questions on individual animals or programs- and the expertise of many vets and top breeders from around the world inputting regularly...If someone wants an opinion on any angus bull or bloodline- somebody has one- whether they know what they are talking about or not

The 5 Bar X site has much the same as Advantage Cattle- also geared a lot toward angus-- altho many on that site have given up chasing the "bigger, better, faster" high performance cattle and are into raising true "moderate" cattle and some of the old maternal lines (Shoshone, Ohlde, Wye, Diamond D)...And that site often gets the expert opinions of Larry Leonard and Mike Keeney--both of who have forgot more than I will ever know about linebreeding and breeding for consistency in cattle--along with several others that have years breeding experience.....

Yep- sure a lot better than the old days when you came in on a cold day and only had the old newspaper and the boob tube to stimulate your mind.. :D

Boy you must have been bored today :D
Don't blame you though that wind was wicked. Had to wait til it went down before I could water and feed my birds. Made the mistake of feeding the cats and it felt like a bunch of knives cutting right through me.

Now I really visit ranchers.net and Cattle today. Did do alot of visiting on a wild land fire fighting site until I didn't agree with their politics and stood up for other ranchers. So I just stick with those who speak the same language as myself and know the difference between a cow and a steer. :D
I know I should surf the net alot more, but sometimes it is hard to get out of a comfort zone and not keep up with friends.

I agree, OT and I'm interested in what Larry Leonhardt has to say as I have met him personally and we have bought bulls from him (and kept replacement heifers that turned into wonderful cows out of those bulls.), So what is the address of the site, if you wouldn't mind telling.

And Thanks!

cattle today is based in fayette ala. so naturally you gonna have southerners on there, i enjoy looking at the western country and your ranching life and listen too you folks storeys ... but CT has it's share of show jockeys, hobbist commercial and registered producers and a few that dont even have cows... all looking at the same animal with a hundred different opinions. :?

OT just has too much time on his hands since he doesn't have to spend 6 hours a day cutting and pasting political bull shart all over the internet.

I went over and checked it out-some posters pretty secure in the knowledge that they are the saviors of the cattle business. One purebred breeder siounding off about the stupid ill informed commercial man-I'll think I'll stay here.

NR, I don't think you'll find anything negative that Larry Leonhardt says about the commercial cattleman. He's geared his operation to those folks. He told us when we were there in 1999, I believe, that no one would pay much for his bulls, but they would sure pay for his cows. At that time he was selling your pick of coming 2-year old bulls for $1500-$2000. He got off the performance wagon in 1979 because he said it wasn't working for him. That is when he started line-breeding his own genetics. I can't stress enough how interesting he is to talk to even tho he says, "I'm just a dirty little beet farmer."

He knows more about Angus genetics than just about anyone.

FWIW

I'm sure Larry is a good guy but there are too many pb breeders with a pen full of overnumbered, overfed, overpromoted cattle that are about as practical as tits on a rooster pontificating on how the commercial man doesn't 'understand' what he needs. Any more if a pb outfit isn't running a big bunch of commercial cattle I'm not much interested in their opinions or their cattle-were pretty lucky to have a few of them up here in different breeds.

I don't think Larry registers many/most of his Shoshone cattle anymore- as he has pretty much a line of commercial customers that don't need/want the papers anyway....

Larry doesn't even LIKE to sell yearling bulls because he doesn't think it is wise to OVERFEED them. Granted, his 2-year olds are fat, but their body is able to handle it better then.jThey run in a hilly lot that it chuck full of rocks, so their feet are sure good. When we saw his cows, they were out grazing and the grazing didn't look to hot, but the cows were in good shape and they were clones. One just like the other. He's different, I'm telling you, he's way different than how you have his catagorized. You should go to Cowley, Wyoming and take a look at that country...it's not much. Shoshone cattle run on a mountain during the summer.

Oh, by the way, the bulls aren't registered. At that time they wore different colored ear tags. The green tags were 25% outcross; the yellows were 100% linebred and the white tags were higher influence outside cattle. However, at that time Larry only chose ONE HERD to outcross to and that was Cedar Hills genetics.

Oh, and how much advertising/publicity have you seen on Shosone Angus
of late? Not being smart here, I've kind of been out of the loop, but I know that there sure hasn't been any promotion by Larry Leonhardt that I have seen for years.

I learned alot the day we spent with him. Too bad I can't remember all of it. But I enjoyed it immensely. He told us he used to go to the bull sales and buy the highest indexing bulls and it didn't work for him. Those bulls are outlyers and cattle will only breed back to the average of that line of cattle. Oh, he's sharp alright.

overnumbered,overfed,overpromoted cattle

If You got that from 5barX I'd hate see what you think of the advantage site.
