Does it matter or not whether on not cattle have already been through a particular system as to how good it works?

I have been raising replacements only for a while so they don't go through any thing to many times.

When I was a kid we had a lot of hogs. We had a pretty nice set up I thought. Where we sorted was on concrete. We weighed the fats individually to see who would go to the sale. We would usually go every other week. Anyway The first time through the system was not to speedy, but after that they would basicly run themselves through and you would just have to run the sort gate. We had a similar to a bud box system from the loading pen in to the trailer. Lots of people cuss hogs when loading, but just like cattle they like to go back to where they came from. Next they knew they were going up the ramp to late to turn around then.

I sure think it helps. We've worked other peoples cows at our place, and you can tell that they are not familiar with things.

This is kinda crude and gives a rough idea how this part of the corral is set up. If you let the squeeze alley empty out a bit cows tend to walk right in, so there is seldom anything in the little holding pen at the back of it. When working calves we vaccinate in the alley and use a post to hold them in. No post is required when working cows into the chute.

Anyway, I'm sure there is nothing unusual about this setup, and I've seen it work very poorly when the volunteer help is not everything you hoped it would be. It works very well with good people who understand slower is faster.

We ultrasounded calves yesterday morning. We used the facilities at the Maytag ranch, mostly becouse they have 120V power and a scale.

The set up was designed by Temple Grandin, but
they modifies it with a Bud Box type affair following the crowding tub.

We did not use the tub, the calves had never seen the system before. They flowed thru it readilly and easily, I had no problems keeping the alleyway leading to the squeeze stuffed full of calves. They WANTED to go there.

Very happy with their set-up and we will be copying it to a large extent as we re-work our working facilities.

It is almost identical to her diagram found on her website for ranch handling system.

Silver's set-up is basicly a Bud Box concept being different in that the exit of the box leading to the working alleyway is not perpindicular the the box. Symantics.
