    Baldy bull market?

I wouldn't do it. You don't know what you would get out of that many crosses. Aren't Black Herefords crossbred? Some people sell Composite bulls, for awhile anyway. Those offspring tend to not be uniform. Are your cows purebred?

    Weaned and worked the tailenders

In our tough conditions and harder winters, it is best to get the calves off the cows fairly early. We always wanted to get the calves off the cows by mid-Oct. It gives the cows time to put condition back on that they need to winter well. After it gets cold and turns to winter you can't...

    Weaned and worked the tailenders

'H, what is really telling is to give your calves a birthweight (I always used 80# for our calves because we don't weigh them). If you have their birthdate and you weigh them individually, you know how many days of age each one is and their individual weaning weight, deduct their BW of 80...

    Bovine bibliography

Webfoot, I know your advice is sound. This is where a person's heart comes into play. 'H has worked for years to get what he wants in his herd. They are acclimated to his conditions. I never fail to be amazed at the body condition of his cows/calves. Since he doesn't depend on his cows for...

Good point, Jody. I forgot about that.

    Feeding wheat?

I can tell you from experience if you feed straight wheat hay be sure to feed a mineral low in phos because the phos in the wheat will cause the cows to back off their mineral intake (phos is a limiter). We had customers who ran into problems feeding straight wheat hay. The cows developed winter...

    This afternoon on the desert

Thanks for sharing your pictures. I like them all!! Especially all that WATER! After all that snow...we are dry here. Hard to believe. We didn't get a lot of runoff, as the snow melted slowly and went into the ground. April was dry and the wind blew a lot so you know the outcome of that. We are...

Oh, sorry. I don't know what Ralco is.

    Weak calf

Ralgro for weak calves? I never heard of that. Usually you give Ralgro after calves have a little age on them. I can agree with the Bos-E.

    Bought a bull

Yes, Ward's. They now have added to their operation and bought a ranch at Decker, I think last year. Interesting that our plumber's family owned that ranch, and he has talked a lot about it. If you ever want to take a jaunt to check out their cattle, the latchstring is always out. I have heard...

How'd it go, Nicky? There are some really good Hereford breeders near here. Come and stay with us and go to their sale.

    Bought a bull

A friend of ours does that. He uses Sim/Angus cross bulls for a few years and then goes back to straight Angus. He likes to keep a bit of Simmental in his cowherd. He has a great set of cows and is a really good stockman.

    Bought a bull

Sounds good 'H. Congratulations!!! I've been helping some of our customers/friends that are looking for straight angus bulls. Whew! There are a lot of bulls out there!!!! I've been noticing quite a few of the Registered Angus breeders have put Rito 707 of Ideal back in their bull lineup. I've...

    Help with newborn calf

Jody and Leanin H have given you good advice. All I would add is make sure you are feeding whole milk milk replacer, not soy based. Go through 2 bags of replacer before you stop feeding him. Good luck!! And be careful.
