    Bull sale

These people have been in the business for several generations. And have a very good reputation. On some of the bulls the auctioneer announce where the bull was going. I heard states from through out the country. The furthest one away was Georgia and I hear that twice.

    Bull sale

Wife is gone to visit her sister so I am on my own to get food. What do you do this time of the year when you want food? Go to a bull sale and get fed for free. So Harrell Hereford bull sale was today and I went. They had 150+ Hereford bulls, 30 Black Angus bulls, A bunch of registered Hereford...

    Calving season

I had 3 calves today. For my neighbors that would be a very slow day. But I only have 60 cows. That means 5% of my cows calved today. The neighbors might have beat me by shear numbers. But today I win the percentage!!! Old #12 with the third calf of the day.

    Colorado Wolf Reintroduction

I had two weaned calves weighing about 450-500 pounds killed by a wolf on October 7. They were less than 200 yards from my house. In mid to late September what is assumed to be the same wolf killed a weaned calf about 3 miles from here. And on October 30 they killed 3 weaned calves in my...

    Once Again

My daughter was working in Montana in an area wolves were moving into. The control method they used was to gut shoot the wolf with a gun that the bullet went clear through. The wolf runs off and dies several days later, hopefully far away. They have nothing to prove who shot it and of course...

    Once Again

I don't know if they publicized it in Colorado, but 9 of the wolves sent from Oregon to Colorado came from packs with a history of killing livestock. Based on the amount that got ate we figured the one which attacked at my place was a single wolf. No sign of it since attacking my neighbors...

    Once Again

The law here in Oregon is if a wolf is arrassing your livestock you are allowed to kill it. Which to most ranchers means if it is on your property you can kill it. If the cows are in a different field at that time they will be in the area where the wolf is long before any law enforcement...

Need advice on starting in Cattle

I worked for a conservation district for 20+ years. Actually did work in 3 different districts. As a result I met and worked with a number of district employees, NRCS personal, and extension people. There are some who are great resources. There are others whom I met who are are government...

Need advice on starting in Cattle

I see the 3 in 1 (a cow/calf pair that the cow is bred back) talked about a lot more in other areas. Here you mostly see bred cows or pairs sell. If the calf is old enough for the cow to be bred they will generally split them before they come into the ring.

    Brands

There is 265 counties in Texas. Seems like a rustlers paradise. Just register the brand used in several other counties. Go steal cows that already have your brand on them. Once they are out in your pasture you have proof they belong to you. Probably a good thing most rustlers aren't the...

    Brands

My brand in Washington was N over a bar. After I registered it I found out it was an old historical brand still used on a large ranch north of Roundup MT. Then I had a load of bred heifers I sold using Superior. They went to Nebraska. Word came back from the new owner that the same brand was...

    that wool vest.

I went and looked. I have a wool coat and wool vest both made by Filson. They both say made in America but doesn't say where the wool came from. Going to look on Pendleton shirts but I have to walk upstairs to check that. I know the Pendleton garments are made in the USA. I know when I...

    Utah Cattlemen’s Association call

First you get invited to do your poetry at the big show in Elko. Now you are an official with the state cattlemen's association. Will you still make time to talk to us little people? Or are you afraid we might ruin your reputation with rumors of you as a goat farmer? At this rate you will...

    Once Again

The wolves attacked. This time it my next door neighbor. They chewed on 3 calves. None dead but I asked and was told one might make it. This is the second incident so fish and wildlife will issue a kill permit. I believe we need to kill every one of them.

    Bleach blondes

I see it pretty regular here. Except they use the bleach to paint a 0 on the hip. Last better than a crayon or paint. And it is cheaper too.

    Waiting

The man from Fish & Game confirmed the dead one was a wolf kill. We had stuffed the cripple in the trailer. We went over to look at it. It died 30 seconds later. Also a definite wolf kill. Even better evidence than the dead one. I will refrain from any further comment on the world wide web.

    Waiting

Waiting for more knowledgeable people to show up. There is 111 weaned calves in the front field. Took the dogs for a walk out the driveway. Found a dead calf and another walking very poorly. Dead one has been eaten on. The slow walker appears to have hide missing and blood up between the...

    Stampede

There is 117 freshly weaned calves in my corral. During the night something must have spooked them. It could have been a cat, or the neighbors dogs, or who knows. That many calves all trying to get through an 8 foot opening on the run at the same time just doesn't work. They snapped off an older...
