    Bull sale

It's easy enough to get fed while they're gone, it's opening the gates and feeding that's tough on a man. The price of bulls is crazy. If I were to ever give more than $4k for a bull, he'd have to sign a pledge not to fight or do other stupid bull stuff. I can always pick a few keepers out of...

Need Help Identifying some Invasive Weeds in Pasture

Yes, S.S.A.P. Back in the good old days of Bull Session, she and Tam would really mix it up with the R-Calf guys like HM and Sandhusker. Good times. Miss the old days when it was really active. @Mountain Cowgirl has been a nice addition to the site, and it's really been nice to have @Peach join...

Need Help Identifying some Invasive Weeds in Pasture

I think it would be worth a try just for the spectator view when Connie finds out the new girl is after old HM. She's always kinda claimed HM for herself, so I don't think she's gonna like that. Should be interesting to watch.

Hey, I enjoyed that immensely. No matter what you're smoking, it has really unleashed the creative artiste in you. You're clearly an asset to the site, and had you only been here in the old days, I think we could have gotten you and HAYMAKER fixed up.

Need Help Identifying some Invasive Weeds in Pasture

Thank you for admitting that. Most yankees from up north are too conceited to admit that Texas is far-superior to the other 56 states. We probably share some similar embarrassments as well, though. We have our Austin that appears to be populated with a two-legged species similar to your...

Need Help Identifying some Invasive Weeds in Pasture

Yes, from the picture you posted, that looks like a variety of sedge. I've never called it nutgrass, and never heard it called nutgrass. However, the fact that I've never heard it called nutgrass might just be because I don't go to county agent meetings and I don't normally talk to anybody about...

Need Help Identifying some Invasive Weeds in Pasture

It looks to me like some type of sedge. I can't blow the pic up well enough to see the stem, but sedges have distinctive three-sided stems - sort of triangle-shaped with sharp edges. Look at the stem and/or search for sedges to see if that's what you have. Assuming it's a sedge, spot treating...

    Vaccines

We use Vision 8 Somnus and BoviShield Gold 5 at branding. At weaning they get another Vision 8 Somnus and a BoviShield Gold One Shot, along with a pinkeye shot of some kind going into winter or spring. Cows are on BoviShield Gold VL5, but if they weren't on an MLV, I'd use a ViraShield instead...

    8th Annual National Grazing Conference

Murder Beach seems like a strange selection for a grazing conference. I wouldn't go to that even if I had time. What were they thinking? It's not like it's a big secret:

Selling Out - Planning to Move

Good luck finding what you're looking for, BC. Lots of people moving in this country, too. In fact, I've never heard of so many people looking to just completely change their lives and uproot. People are getting out of the dirty cities and the commie states and moving to more rural areas. And...

    Best Therapy

Thanks for the update and for the pics. Glad to hear you're getting around good, but like the others said, don't rush into it. It's hard for all of us not to try to do too much, though.

    First generation

I would have liked to have met your Dad and spent some time visiting with him, Big Muddy. There was a lot of wisdom in those old guys, and all of it isn't out of date like the land grant universities and slick magazines would have us believe.

    First generation

That's good advice. I'm sure redrobin would never buy any of these, but straight Herfs, pinkeyes, skunk tails, spots, and other Crayola box rejects can normally be bought at a substantial discount. And while they might not be something you'd want to run in a pasture by the road, as long as...

Great pics and you've really got a way with words, H. I could have almost seen the place just reading your words. Thanks for sharing.

    Rib or hip brand ?

Probably varies depending on what kind of chute you have, but like Big Muddy indicated, shoulder brands can be tough to apply in my chute for small calves. Anything over 4-weights and they're just as easy as a hip brand to apply and I actually prefer them.

    Rib or hip brand ?

The discussion about branding iron material has me remembering when we used fire irons, but it's a distant memory for me now. I'm fortunate that I only have to brand at my chute at home and the 110v plug over the chute makes it easy to keep a hot iron all the time. I'll have to admit that I've...

MY THOUGHTS ON THE CATTLE MARKET - Steve Moreland - October 10, 2020

Looks pretty gloomy for you guys selling calves. I don't really see anything to change that much until we get through the end of the year and get closer to grass cattle order time. Getting the election behind us might help, but on the other hand, it could make things even worse.

    Vaccines?

Yeah, the Vision with Somnus got really hard to find last year. I had to do a plain Vision and add a Somubac. Seems to be easier to find this year, although I've noticed some other products that seem to be on long backorder. I've noticed fewer injection site knots using Vision 8 Somnus than...
