Heard they dropped a package from space into your back yard. Hope it missed you.

    Swamp hay

When there’s little hay in the fields you gotta head into the swamps. I quit when the water starts coming up and the haybine wheels cut through the sod. I couldn’t get much of what is in the pictures but should end up with 70 or 80 5x6 bales. The cows will pick through it this winter and can bed...

    The mutt is coming along

He is three now, I use him every day. I think he is still getting handier every day. We moved this little breeding group of yearlings by ourselves today, and all I did was give some instructions. He‘s not a trial dog but a pretty fair ranch hand.

    Replacements

A breeding group of replacements. The two year old bull has come up lame so I’ve been keeping this group in close quarters. Got nervous and rented a yearling to help out, even though the 2 yr. old seemed to be doing his job.

.... I went to feed the replacements and discovered a poorly fastened gate had allowed the bulls out of the corral and in with the heifers. They could have been out only for a couple of hours. The last two that appeared bred calved today, making a total of four. Live and learn they say...

    Helping at the Neighbours

No, we sorted on foot. Which explains why I'm wore out. We used horsed to bring groups up, and to work out the odd cranky cow. Facilities at this location were not really handy for horse of foot work, so it was kind of a "make do" operation.

    Helping at the Neighbours

Been giving the neighbours a hand weaning and sorting the last two days. Four of us managed to wean and sort around 1,200 calves. Or about 1/3 of the herd. I appeared to have a "captive audience" of freshly separated mothers and thought it would make a good picture. I Should have tried it in...

    Haylage year

It was a tough year to make hay. Most of it ended up in plastic but at least it's done. Well, still have some oats standing but doubt it will dry enough to salvage them. It will be interesting to see how the cows fare on a pretty much straight silage diet this winter.

Calves in the ring October 2018

Thought I'd post a pic of a pen of my calves coming through the auction this fall. Not my heavies, but not bad either. Mostly just content to see the evenness of the calf crop. I didn't get a good video of the heavy pen, but it was a heart warming sight for me. I guess I mostly wanted to post...

    Hey Pure Country

Not sure if you still lurk here, but it seems to me you moved down to the Kettle River area and wondering if you are keeping dry. Listening to the news it sounds pretty bad down there.

    2018 Calving pictures

Haven't seen many calf pictures lately, thought I'd post one and hope to see some from others. Taken April 13, 2018.

    Twins

I understand nutrition to be a factor in the twinning rate of cattle, and genetics to a point, but some years twinning seems to get carried away. All things being equal is it just chance?

    Not Enough Bears?

Well our communist gov't has once again made a decision based on peoples feelings that have no actual knowledge of the subject matter. What do you think GCreek? https://energeticcity.ca/2017/12/b-c-government-outlaws-grizzly-bear-hunting/

    Looks Like Winter

Looks like winter has set in pretty solidly here now. Seems like snowfall warnings are a daily occurrence these days. Another one in effect for tonight. Poor old batteries on the solar powered water bowl are getting a workout. Will have to run the generator down to top them off again in a day or...

    Looking Like Winter Today

Woke up to a foot of snow and no power this morning. Yesterday it was 14C (57F), which was good because we had a few liner loads of cattle at the salebarn so it made for great sorting / weaning / shipping weather. Got a genset down to the replacement heifers this morning to power up the water...

    The Smile Says It All

My little girl has really come into her own this past year, her horsemanship is coming along nicely, and the best part is she's having a ton of fun. I just love the smile. She won 1st place in the 1D on both ends of a barrel racing jackpot double header the other day (where this photo was taken)...
