New to this forum . Was wanting to hear how ya'll are working your pump jacks. What size (HP), Clutch or gear reducer. New to this so, maybe someone can explain clutch vs gear reducer or are they one in the same?Pulley sizes etc. info on pumpjack is 50w12,peak torque rating in thousands of pounds; 6.4(pprl in hundreds of pounds);20 gear ratio 30.9-1. v belt wheel size is 6 1/2". Engine size is B/S 900 series 206cc(6.5 HP), no gear reducer, Well depth 210ft.....Help.. thristy cattle ... Much appreciated.

Soapweed is one of the pumpjack guys from here and he is on the road home today so maybe will be able to tell you something when he gets back.

I'm sure there are others that use them as well. :D

I'll have to look at ours, but I think its a 3 horse Briggs. No clutch or gear reduction. Think it has a 2 1/2" pulley on the motor, and maybe a 6 inch on the pump jack. I HATE IT!!! If I was to do it again, I would put an electric motor on it and run it off of our little 1500 watt Coleman generator. Much more dependable, lighter, and the generator will run longer on a tank of gas.

Brand of pump jack would help. they have different gear ratios. On a Duplex I use a 12" pulley on the jack and I think a 2 1/2 on the motor to get it to run 40 strokes a minute or a little less with the engine at 3/4 throttle. I have one Monitor jack with a 16" pulley on it since the jack has a 10 to 1 gear ratio, it works good with the same motor. I use 4 hp Honda motors with the fuel tank removed and hooked up to 12 or 24 gallon tank. They will burn about 2 1/2 gallons in 24 hours on a 110' well. I run them 24 hours a day and change oil every 4 days.

Thanks guys. I'll get more info tonight

not real familiar with them, do know on oil well you can kinda tell how deep it is by how big the jack is how much/where counterweighs are.

So---had one little jack on place I leased, about 1/2 hp electric that pumped slow and ran 24/7----it hailed out and I kicked around and found about 1/4 hp that maybe came off a washing machine. It'd barely lift next draft---maybe a qt?---then kinda free spool back down. Dug thru the iron pile out there and found some shaver post driver springs, tarp straps, wire, etc---a little tinkering and creative fine tuning and you could hear and feel it runnin' free and easy---REA out there, they charged a minimum and I never used enuf juice to go over----

Don't go through the gear reduction deal, just put a 2 in (or so) pulley on the motor and go. If need more power, add a counter weight on a rope. Cheaper and you can pump water PDQ

Every time I get disgusted with too much wind, my memory is a reminder that it was on a day with no wind to pump water that a pump jack whacked off the first joint of the middle finger of my left hand. Now I appreciate the wind to pump the windmills, and try to steer clear of pump jacks if at all possible.
