    Cleft palate calf

How about that - I'd forgotten about that calf and my wife couldn't recall it either. I do remember sitting there listening to the birds though. Talk about a trip down memory lane! We never had so many poorly twins and never want to again.

    Little helpers

That's the right time to start them! It will be interesting for them to look back at this picture in about 20 years...

What's the catch? Hahaha, fooled ya there 'H - it's a Powder River catch! (Okay, just came in from the cold and the humor is weak I know) Congratulations on a fine prize!

Using side exit to get calf on cow

Our chute has a split-level door on the side. Swing the bottom half open and have at it. The side gates are hinged at the back end of the crate. Even the cow's ability to kick out the side is very limited if you adjust the sides in tighter. And yes, I do have to use it once or twice a year... :-(

John Haringtons take on beef markets

John Harrington is one of the best commentators in the industry and definitely a favorite read for me. While he described very well what happened in the US feeding sector, he clearly has no inkling the depth of the crisis that devastated the Canadian cattle industry for not just merely one...

    Slaughtered a hog

Yup, we did. Raised 1 hog for our own consumption this fall. Took it to the plant last week and picked it up today wrapped all in nice lil packages and split it with our son and his family. At today's market price, the hog was worth $145. We paid the butcher shop $259 for slaughter, cut...

Car hits bull, cops shoot rancher---

Wow, the Idaho State police running it like the mob. It sounds like Idaho is a good state to avoid if you value your life.

    Smallest Calf

Well you could about stick that one in your shirt pocket to warm it up! :!: Sounds like its spirit outmatches its body. Had a tiny twin last year and I think it was even not quite that small. But it survived just fine transplanted onto a cow that lost her calf. And at the end of the year...

    Banding calves at birth?

It works very well for us and has for years without troubles of any sort. However, a vet once told me that we are leaving a lot of gain on the table because of banding newborns since they don't have the help of their natural hormones. It didn't change my mind on it though. :?

    Calves

Wish you were closer. I'd put one of those boys with my cows any day.

Ag Sec'y proposes closing sheep station

andybob, it's more of a question of whether they actually want to understand anything other than their own thinking which, incidentally, allows no room for any cattle. Good to hear from you again!

    Calf Prices! WOW!!!

The local butcher cattle sale last week saw top steers sell at record highs. 1445 at $1.68. Many steers are bringing $2000 - $2200. So most of these calves will see almost $1000 spread. Should that not work?

    Triplets

That's amazing! So far we've had two pairs of twins this spring and I have 1 1/2 pairs to show for it - 2 calves and one cow. Been bottle feeding the orphan but had a dead calf yesterday so will try to graft the bottle calf onto the other momma. Had to help a heifer calve last evening and she...

    Who?

Same as you - a couple of aborted fetus several weeks post vaccination, but not verifiable as a direct result. So I quit vaccinating cows for the past couple of years since I had too many late calvers straggling the season out. This year I am going to vaccinate again after calving is complete...
