    Old Memory

For some reason today I remembered riding at a college rodeo at Montana State in the spring of 1971. I was in the bareback which of course is the first event. I was the first gunner out. Reg Kessler had the stock. For those who didn't know him, Reg was a very large imposing man. I was a wet...

    It is raining

We have nearly dried the river up taking irrigation water. Fish have to walk to get around.

    Daylight Savings Time

I ask my dog what time is it very often. That is followed by telling her if she wore a watch she would know. She just looks at me and wags her tail. I think she figures it is time for a treat or time to get petted.

    It is raining

There is a computer driven site called rain drops. I don't know how accurate it is. I pulled up Baker county on it. You click on a spot and it gives you the 24 hour total for that spot. I clicked on a lot of spots around the county just now. The results varied. But it gave me by far the...

    It is raining

Oh yes the driveway would be good for fishing or duck hunting. That thunder storm at 4:00 really put some down. We had some the last week in June. Before that it was April. When you live in the dessert you celebrate any time it rains.

    Daylight Savings Time

It wont affect my work day but it will be 8:00 in the morning before it gets light here. It doesn't really matter to me. I go out when it gets daylight and come in when it starts getting dark. All it changes it what the clock says and I try to avoid looking at the clock.

    It is raining

A friend was here yesterday evening a number of times he said it was going to rain. I said yep in about 2 months. I still had 21 bales to pick up. But it is raining!!! Go ahead and rain on my hay. It is suppose to be 90 degrees tomorrow. This 1/4 inch will dry off pretty quick. I will...

    Butcher heifer

Weather that hot is tough on them. Do they have shade. My heifer has a loafing shed which she hangs out in.

It is the reason to not buy cheap panels or gates.

    Butcher heifer

The earliest butcher date I could get is late December so I am not pushing the grain to her yet. Only about 6 lbs a day. And she is eating the grass which grew in the corral Around the first of September I will significantly increase the grain. And once she gets the grass eaten she will...

YIKES! record breaking heat is coming

It is shy of the record but pretty darn warm. I hauled hay this morning. For some reason the bales were at the two ends of the field. So when I finished the east end I drove the loader tractor to the west end and walked back 300 = yards to get the truck and trailer. At 9:30 it was 83 already...

    New Ranchers? Starting advice?

Again back to the deviation of a ranchette. 10-20 acres with house to live in while working a day job. A place which grows enough grass to have a steer to eat. Go for it. A full blown ranch is a bit more involved in both time and money. Now would not be a good time to do it. Cattle are at...

YIKES! record breaking heat is coming

It is 93 -95 depending on which one you believe. I have 130 bales to pick up and put in the stack. My plan is to start at 5:00 in the morning and quit before noon. Maybe before 10:00. 8 bales per load on y trailer. A little under an hour per load. 16 loads. This will take a few days. But...

    New Ranchers? Starting advice?

Thinking of 2 guys I know who started with nothing and built good sized ranches. One worked graveyard shift at a sawmill. His wife and kids did a lot of the work that they could do. He worked and slept a little during the day. They lived on his wages from the mill and put any and all of the...

    New Ranchers? Starting advice?

My parents only had 5 acres. They would buy a steer in the spring and butcher it in the fall. When I was in second grade Dad bought me a Holstein bottle calf. By the time I was a senior in HS I had enough steers which I sold for locker beef to pay for 2 years of college (fall of 1969). I...

    New Ranchers? Starting advice?

If it is in fact a hobby place. People spend lots of time and money on their hobbies. So what would a person need to start a small ranchette? A lot of money with no expectation of being able to have a return on it. And if a person has no experience, well education is never cheap and this is...

    New Ranchers? Starting advice?

Define a small ranchette. To me that is a hobby place.
