    Wind!

It sure blew here yesterday evening and early this morning. We live in a hole. I joke that the wind has to blow straight down to hit us. Well it found a way to weave through the hills to hit here.

    Sold Out

Between when I retired and we sold out over on the coast and when we bought this place and moved here. We spent 9 months in south central WA. I helped a shirttail relative of the wife's who has a ranch for something to do. When we were buying this place people asked him why at our age were we...

    Sold Out

Hmmm I was 67 when we bought this place and moved here. But our operation is set up differently. It is not year around. There are definitely times of the year when we can easily escape to travel if we want to. It is fairly rare that I have to put in a full day. But I have something to do...

Should we give this place a funeral?

It is kind of funny. The first time I watched him preform must have been the fall of '23. He got invited to do a little poetry in Elko. Not the big show just a Saturday evening deal. I am sure it was a audition for the big show. I would say he was nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof except...

Should we give this place a funeral?

Click on his bio and pictures. Once there look at the Utubes. Phil's Eye Ache is the poem about the one eyed Swede. When my computer went down last September I lost facebook and as a result lost contact with Darrell. I am going to have to reach out to him.

Should we give this place a funeral?

I have had the pleasure of listening to Darrell life twice. He is the real deal. When he did his one eyed Swede at Jordan Valley last spring the McKenzie kids in the row in front of us were literally rolling on the floor laughing.

    Ivermectin and bulls.

The wife took ivermectin when she had Covid. I don't know that it cured her. But she didn't get worse once she started in on it. And she did recover a couple of days later. Me, I was well exposed to Typhoid Mary and just got a stuffed up nose for about 3 days.

Well, he wasn't a ranch dog pard ... err ... I mean your honor

Ok. As I drove into town this morning going by Sutton Creek I thought. A. Which cop in Baker county would write a ticket for running a stop sign in rural Baker county. And B. How unlucky are you to even have a cop in the area of Hwy 30 and Sutton Creek. I don't think I have ever seen a cop...

Well, he wasn't a ranch dog pard ... err ... I mean your honor

Who in there right mind would run the stop sign coming off Sutton Creek Road. You could see cars coming from the left before you got there. But to see cars from the right you have to really turn your head hard to that side.

    Branding photos

That buckskin is the neighbor's go to horse. I believe that is him on the far end of the line tied to the fence. The yellow horse tied to the fence is a real good horse. That is not the yellow horse in the 4th picture who is also the real deal. The smaller horse who is first in line is a...

Hello from The Windy Ridge Ranch in Texas

There is one family here who went to using a calf table. The son told me that if they held a branding that they would have to go to other people's brandings. True. But they have pretty much isolated themselves from the community in a lot of other ways. Then I have heard the wife complain...

Hello from The Windy Ridge Ranch in Texas

One thing those big rope and drag brandings do it they help to build community. People get together, work together, and talk to each other. Community is important and one of those things we seem to be slowly losing.

    Branding photos

These are pictures from past years brandings. The first 2 picture is from last year at my place in '21. The third one is some horses getting a break while others are busy roping. And then a stretched out calf who is getting his mind changed. Both of those pictures are from a neighbors...

Hello from The Windy Ridge Ranch in Texas

The wife says when she had the ranch down on the Nevada line they would be riding a big circle. Dogs would just be dragging. Then they would jump a jack rabbit. Off to the races with the dogs.. And here they had just been trying to get the dogs to the next water hole. Watching good dogs work...

    Snow melt

That was yesterday. This is this morning. Well the river is really rolling today. The dam went from dumping 650 cfs to over 800 cfs. I just heard that he has 1400 cfs coming into the reservoir so he is going to have to do something more. The temperature has been dropping so I was hoping the...

Hello from The Windy Ridge Ranch in Texas

A couple years ago we has 5 or 6 late calves who missed the branding. Rather than get a couple of ropers for that few calves we drug my calf table out and set it up. After we were through B said that was enough to remind him how much he hates calf tables. We do 200-300 most days. Enough...

    Snow melt

It has been up to 70 degrees here the last couple days. That melts the snow. The hill behind the house is 4,700 feet tall. A couple days ago there was snow down to around 4,000. Now there is barely any clear up to the top. The reservoir is dang near full so the dam man has been dumping 650...
