BENEFITS
OF PHOSPHORUS
-
Needed for proper
utilization of energy.
-
Component of many
enzyme systems.
-
Needed for
absorption & utilization of carbohydrates.
-
Needed for proper
metabolism & health of rumen microorganisms.
-
Important in
efficiency of feed utilization.
-
To obtain maximum
benefits of vitamins, proteins, and minerals.
-
Increases appetite
and increase ME for NE purposes.
-
Combines with fats
so it aids in the movement, deposition, & utilization of fats.
-
Important in
building muscle tissue.
-
Young & growing
animals have a higher P requirement than mature animals.
-
Lactating animals
have higher P requirements.
-
At 15,000# milk a
cow needs 18.48 lb Ca and 15.4 lb P.
-
Important for
lactation, future lactations, health, calf health, longevity of the
cow.
-
A shortage causes
lameness, stiff joints, pica, buffalo back, lowered appetite,
decreased growth rate, & knock-knees (sheep), and retained
placenta.
-
Digestibility of
feeds is not affected, just more feedstuff is available for use
(appetite & enzymes).
-
Digestibility
declines from very high in a milk fed calf to 55% in the mature
animal.
-
Phos is a critical
mineral in reproduction.
-
Critical mineral
during gestation.
-
Sexual maturity is
hastened & breeding regularity is seen with phosphorus.
-
Research says
fertility & weaning weights are increased.
-
Dairy: High phos
diet had less ovarian dysfunction & fewer services per conception.

MORE
FACTS ABOUT PHOSPHORUS
-
P is lost
mainly in the feces.
-
P concentration
in rumen is 3X greater than can be accounted for in diet ingesta
(microorganism).
-
Phytic P
(major P in grains & oil meals) has low availability for
monogastrics. Is effective for ruminants.
-
Dietary P
levels are critical when Fe & Al intake is high
-
Direct antagonism
between Ca & P and Ca & Mg. little
interaction between P & Mg.
-
Depressed P
absorption with high levels of Zn, Cu & Co.
-
Under high N
intake
-Mg availability is lower
-Ca retention is greater
-P availability & retention is not affected.
-
Ca, P,
and Vit D
-
1:1 to 2:1
ratio (and adequate P) to combat milk fever.
-
Adequate Ca
& P nutrition depends on:
-Sufficient supply of both minerals.
-Suitable ratio between them.
-Presence of Vitamin D for more efficient utilization of Ca
& P.
-With plenty of Vitamin D the ratio becomes less important.
-
Moderate
deficiency - silent or irregular estrus.
-
Marginal
deficiency - infertility (open cows).
-
Low P
level - anestrus (no cycling).
-
89% of cows on
high P (150% NRC) conceived on 1st service. The other 11% conceived
on the 2nd service.
-
59% of cows on P
(100% NRC) conceived on 1st service, 35% of cows conceived on 2nd
service, and 6% of cows were open.

FEEDING
DIRECTIONS
PASTURE MINERAL is formulated to supplement high roughage rations
and diets. Pasture mineral is excellent for improving the calcium to
phosphorus ratio in such feeds because of the supplements
high-phosphorus, low-calcium composition.
BEEF CATTLE: Feed at
a rate of 1-2 oz. daily.
DAIRY CATTLE: Feed at a rate of 1-2 oz. during the dry period.
**CAUTION** Do not feed to sheep due to the copper levels in this
product.
**CAUTION** For lactating dairy cows, do not feed more than 10 mg of
Iodine per head per day to meet daily requirements of Iodine.
