Looks as if all had nice time for Christmas! Always good when 'old man winter' cooperates for the Holy Days! Cows grazing thru the winter is such a blessing that it somewhat evens up the time spent keeping the water available. If someone would invent a really effective overflow valve that didn't plug up at the slightest excuse (such as a minute amount of dry grass stuck in it!) life of we whose cattle hopefully graze thru the winter could be far less stressful!

Our worst dilemma involving cleaning out an over-flow did occur during summer, tho. The elder cowboy on the ranch reached in the 3" pipe to remove a wad of hay and was 'stung' by what he assumed was an insect....until he started having strange symptoms, such as numbness of hands. Turned out it was a rattlesnake! Only one fang connected, which was fortunate, as it was a young one and they cannot 'meter' the amount, but give it all the venom at once, which is far more serious than the dose of an adult rattler. Fortunately, it was treated early enough to have no lasting effects, and only a couple days in the hospital.

Oh my gosh, mrj! That was a freak accident. Glad everything turned out well.
There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.

Wow! That is quite a happening, MRJ. Glad your cowboy survived that deal.

It's been very nice weather here the past couple of weeks. Anyone calving in January in Nebraska this year is "hitting the jackpot." We will see what the rest of the winter and next spring brings--just taking it one day at a time, just like we always do.

Thanks FH and Soapweed. That happened a couple of years ago. We feel blessed with the outcome....and the fact that it was the first such incident on this ranch since our family has been in this area, beginning about 1888, tho the ranch was started about 190?
There are at least six members of the 'founding families' who established ranches along the Brave Bull Creek which runs into Bad River west of Midland, SD.
