Howdy all, I was just curious what brand of hats everyone wears in the winter time.. I had a crown cap wool scotch cap and lost it and have replaced it with a stormy kromer and not near as impressed with it.

I seldom wear a cap... Usually wear my hat until the wind gets up over 30-40mph-- and then when I do I like the railroad cap too...
I do have a big old furry brown bomber hat that comes out when its blizzarding-- but unless you stay out in the cold my head gets to sweating in it too bad..
I prefer a cowboy hat- and have several sets of ear muffs that fit under the hat in my vest and coat pockets and stuck in each vehicle... They keep my ears plenty warm for most weather...
 
If the weather is bad enough to require a cap, it has to be a Stormy Kromer Rancher. The extra length is awesome when its bad outside.
 
Thanks AC Diesel! Thats exactly what I'm looking for. I too prefer to wear a cowboy hat when the weather is fit, but when its cold a prefer a scotch cap as I don't like wearing a hood backing around with a loader tractor. and a cowboy hat isn't feasible to wear with my town job.


Loomixguy, I have the original, is the rancher quite a bit warmer?

I have an OLD Blue railroader cap that the ear flaps cap way down and covered the tips of my ears. I got a new one I think maybe from Tip's and the flaps leave my ears half uncovered. I don't think i have any Brahma in me. :D

I bought a supply of a oilskin type winter cap. The flaps are on the out side and have a lace with a slide that hold them down. I my have to quit ranching when they wear out. :wink:
 
I think the Rancher is a LOT warmer. But don't get a Kromer w/out trying it on first. What you wear in a cowboy hat isn't what you wear in a Kromer. The Kromer will be bigger by several sizes.
 
We have always worn 'scotch caps' in the winter. Mr. FH got a new one for Christmas, Navy in color. It's the heaviest, warmest one yet. Called Dry Ice cap, made in Canada. Miles City Saddlery in Miles City, Mt. sells them:

When our friend comes up from Texas (he's a native Montanan) he always tries to take several back with him as they can't get them there. Sometimes, they need them, even in Texas!

One of the original pioneers in this country was Lester Dorsey. He didn't worry too much about fashion. In winter he pulled a pair of pantyhose on his head and over his ears and clapped on whatever hat was handy on top of that.
If the wind was blowing or he was riding a snow machine it looked kind of like a demented rabbit coming at you. :lol:

I've got one of the Dry Ice caps, its one of the best I've gotten in long time. I've got a Stormy Kromer Ranchers, its not very warm and the wind blows through it.

I needed to add on an earlier post that you need the Kromer Rancher with Gore-Tex. Wind won't whistle through that.

According to what I seen on the web the last time I searched beaver brand is that they went out of business.
