Well, the fair is over, the steers are sold, and now we can all relax til we start again this fall. All in all, it was a pretty good fair, there were 133 steers in the sale, and they averaged 1.29/lb. The grand Champion sold for 4.20/lb. A bit of controversy over the Judge's choices, but when isn't there, and really, not much can be done about it.

As for our kid's, there were good points and bad points to the whole thing. The worst of it was my 6 year old daughter getting trampled by her heifer. We were entering the ring for her first class, which was showmanship. I thought she was doing quite well, and her heifer was being an angel for her. Some guy was in the ring and was in a hurry coming out, just as we were entering. The heifer, of course saw him coming, and sidestepped to get away from him. She didn't spook really, or try to run away, but she knocked Jordan underneath her and of course stepped on the back of her leg. I was really concerned that she would have a broken leg, but everything turned out better than that. She even wanted to go back into the showring, until I told her she would have to walk, that changed her mind. Had it been any other class, I probably could have carried her, and we could have gone in. After a bit of time to heal, and get over the trauma, she went on to show her heifer in the heifer class, where she placed 3rd out of 3, and then did the team grooming where they placed 2nd out of 8 (I think). All in all a fairly good experience for her, and I was impressed, because she really wasn't afraid of her heifer after the accident.

As for my son, he did quite well. Probably better than I thought he would have with his steer. He only had 1 class to show in (the steer class) as showmanship and all the others are preselected by how they do in the club's achievement day. Only 1st and 2nd get to show at the regional fair. His steer placed 3rd out of 7. We were quite happy with the way his steer did. Then on to the sale where he got 1.30/lb for his steer at 1140 lbs. Plus, there were no problems with his steer.

I'm so glad to hear your daughter didn't get hurt badly. It looks like you had a good fair regardless of the accident Smile .

Thank you.

I was pretty worried when it happened. Just picture a 900 lb calf on a 50 lb kid's leg. Everything happens so fast, and seems to take forever. It seemed like that heifer just stood still for 5 min, when it was probably only 5 sec. She has a nice imprint of the one claw on the calf of her leg. It is amazing what tylenol (and the chance to do the rides at the fair Wink ) can accomplish.

They did have a good time, even with the accident.

Great looking kids, beautiful animals. I love looking at heifers and steers when they're all gussied up. Love the markings on your son's steer!
