Hauled some dry heifers and a bull to the sale, was sitting a seat away from a few old gentlemen. Tenny and I was talking about some of the cattle that came in some pairs one cow had a long hair calf with frozen ears and tail we talked about how it was probably born on cold morning.. Some triangle body cows came in you could see every rib, my comment was gee I ran out of hay this spring and my cows never looked that bad…. The guy next to me said those cows had feed it the type they are.
He asked me if I had anything in the sale, I said some heifers that lost their calves after we branded and a bull that came off the forest and would stay there when we took him back as he like the neighbors heifers next to me. Then I added my ranch is for sale and I might as well sell him now.
Our cattle had sold before this guy had sit down and we got after awhile to go see if the check was ready. It wasn’t and Tenny went out to the truck to nap and I went back up into the sale. The men were talking about hay and I asked how it was last year and how it was looking this year. Then the guy was talking about baling and he had got 3 bales out and BOOM. I asked what kind of baler he used he said small bale. To which I said you could not run fast enough to give me one. To which he stood up and said I should not have said that he took off his hat and said look at my hair and my poor back and I do what I have to do….
My thoughts were gee he got more hair and darker color then I do….
He did asked what I used and I said I traded my stackliner years ago for a round baler to whom he said you step in it….sale was over and I just smiled

| You sound like me when a neighbor was telling how they treated scour calves with Pen-Strep. I told him that it would do as much good if he just squirted it on the ground.

looks like you have a good place to work , you just interning till school this fall?
Don't know what set that guy off but he tried to rip me a new one, maybe he forgot meds .... |
It must be very hard to sell your place, but very smart. Where are you going to try and move to? I'm sure wherever it is, it won't have any government land, or snow seven months out of the year . I'm JEALOUS!!! I wish you good luck on your new adventure . |
looking at a place north of Lusk, property taxes kept me from SD, Neb, Mt.
Dr Smith from UW been trying to talk me into calving in June if we get that place.... my thoughts is May should work.
My son dosn't like the place said "dad there are no moutains" , Daughter is the hand she likes the miles to ride and even has a place in the timber to put our old sheep camp wagon. Will be a shock not feeding all winter into late spring. There a few shalely ridges of BLM but no more Forest Circus to deal with . Will have to learn to be a plumber as there over 30 miles of pipeline and 40 tanks ...
