The Kosmo Kid and his kolt. He rode the roan, and I rode my mule the eight miles from our ranch to the Bowring ranch.

Messing around

View of the Kid from atop the mule

Cattle guard on the way to town

Yearling heifers fighting flies

Going through a gate

Ready to mount his steed

My mule moving his mouth

A pretty good pair for covering the miles

Wildflowers in the sand

This is just the fourth day the horse has been fooled with.

Gailund and his black team

Enjoying his perch in the shade

The chuckwagon lunch stand

Giving visitors a tour of the ranch, which is owned by the Nebraska State Game and Parks.

Team penners ready to participate

Riders ready to roll

Sundance and his associate. Peach brought the pickup and trailer, with our three more appropriate mounts for penning cattle. She also hauled over the Polaris Ranger. After the penning, Kosmo took the horses and mules home. Peach and I took the Polaris Ranger back home cross country through the hills.

The friendly well repairman served as judge for the penning

A good cowboy as well as a well fixer-upper. Wink

My dad and his bride

The Kid riding his colt bareback later in the day

Church services later in the evening

An object lesson of the physical, soul, and spiritual parts of man

I wondered where ol Goose showed up from in the Team penners ready picture. Looks like you had a plan for a good day. Looks like you had a great day. Miles will make the roan --can he travel with Willie?

The roan travels real well, but hardly anything can travel like Willie the mule. Wink Willie can outwalk about any four-legged beast, and don't forget he won second place in the saddle mule race at Jake Clark's Mule Days in 2006 (at least that is what they told me when I bought him). If he just hadn't killed a calf last spring, I would really like him. Confused Smile

Many thanks for sharing. Looks like your family had three generations there. I imagine your dad rode horseback to this event quite a few times. If fuel gets to $7 or $8 a gallon like some predict we may all be traveling horseback or buggy again. As I was driving to town the other day to get a haircut I got to thinking Shocked , it's costing me $8 in fuel to get a $10 haircut . . ., so I had to buy some more stuff to cheapen up my haircut Laughing

How'd the pennin' go? Thanks for the tour and the update on the colt. Bring that mule to utah and i'll put him up against my dad's paint mare. She's got the attitude of a blind grizzly with constipation but she flat walks away from everything in these parts. She has a little walker in her and goes over 16 tall. She lives up to her name though...."Mischeif".
