gcreekrch, the crew is actually Australian Shepherd, that's the mother of the pups in the middle of the bottom pic. I'm curious to see how half collie pups will work out.

Haymaker, the grass is late but it's here. We turned yearlings out on grass last week, bet we are holding the mother cows back on feed a couple more days to make sure their pasture has a good jump on them.

It's amazing how horses will winter when their faces are stuck in a bale for the duration Wink

You should have dogs of a different color than the cattle. Aren't they hard to tell apart from a distance? Wink Smile

Nice looking cattle.

If ya would, keep us updated on that. I've wondered about that type of cross myself. My Aussie won't get out of his own way and I don't have enuff ground to keep BC busy Wink Laughing

Nice looking mare and foal....looks like that Peace grass is great feed Smile

We crossed our male Border Collie with gregs bro,Female Aussie, the guys that bought the pups were very impressed with the cross.Bros Aussies were pretty timid and this cross bred that out of them a bit.

Seems like Aussie/Border Collie X is quite popular. As for me, I wondered how you could get what you want crossing a head dog with a heeler.

Our Vet in W. Montana had an Austrailian Shepherd he called "Pattie."
She was totally worthless. Worse than that even, no dog would have been better than her. But an old cowboy named Bob had a terrific Border Collie (the best one I have ever seen) that he called "Scottie." These two guys were neighbors and the vet wanted Pattie bred to Scottie. So they mated them several times and the pups weren't very good. The last time the vet called to say Pattie was in heat, Bob wasn't interested. He told the vet,
"Not interested in breeding Scottie with Pattie any more. You can't breed a monkey to a football and get a football player." Razz

Nice mare and foal Silver. Smile

My neighbour's dog just had a litter of Aussie/Border Collie cross pups. Haven't seen them yet, but I'll get pics when I get there to see them.

We have 3 Heeler/Catahoula crosses, they're just 9 months old and haven't quite learned all the "obeying" skills they need yet.. can you say shock collar? but are doing really well for their age, they are definetly not afraid of cattle!

The border collie dog in this case naturally prefers the head. It seems that dominant dogs of any breed prefer to work the front..... type 'A' personalities perhaps? I'm kinda hoping I'll get good dogs that don't quit on me if I happen to speak sharply to them. I grew up with Border Collies and therefore have a great respect for their intelligence and abilities. I've just been around the Aussies for a few years now have no reason to think that they are not every bit as good.

Soapweed, on a good year it's not too hard to tell the dogs from the cattle.... the dogs tend to be a little smaller and make a little different noise Wink The puppies are black and so should limit any further confusion in the poor years. Laughing

Thanks all for the favorable comments.
