Tiptoe, through the Lobbyists
Saturday, May 10, 2008
John McCain claims to be a fighter for ethics reform, but yesterday, Doug Goodyear, the man that John McCain picked to run the Republican National Convention, resigned from that post. Goodyear is CEO of lobbying firm DCI Group that has earned millions lobbying for ExxonMobil, GM, and others. But the reason he resigned is that the cyclone disaster in Myanmar has inconveniently brought to light the fact that the DCI Group was paid $348,000 to run a public relations campaign for the military dictatorship of Myanmar to (among other things) denounce claims by the Bush administration that the regime engaged in rape and other abuses.

Unfortunately, Doug Davenport, the the DCI Group person in charge of lobbying, who was directly responsible for the Myanmar PR campaign, is still a regional director for the McCain presidential campaign.

This whole mess is on top of the recent disclosure that at least three of McCain’s top advisors are lobbyists who were successful this February in getting a $35 billion military contract awarded to European plane maker Airbus, bypassing American plane manufacturer Boeing and thus costing the US tens of thousands of jobs. And McCain himself personally intervened to switch the contract from Boeing to Airbus.

Is all this any surprise when McCain’s campaign is full of lobbyists, including his campaign manager Rick Davis? |

Clinton Supporter Arrested in N.J. Corruption Sting
By Patrick Healy
Update: Blake Zeff, a spokesman for the Clinton campaign, just e-mailed to say that Mayor Rivera stepped down from Mrs. Clinton’s Mayors Council today.
Among the 11 public officials arrested in an F.B.I. corruption sting in New Jersey today was a leading Democratic supporter of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign in that state, Mayor Samuel Rivera of Passaic.
It was the latest legal embarrassment involving an ally of the Clinton campaign, coming only one day after a wealthy Clinton donor, Norman Hsu, missed his court date in a California fraud case and apparently disappeared.
Clinton advisers this spring and summer have been aggressively touting their long list of endorsements from elected officials and prominent Democratic donors, to indicate the breadth of establishment support that Mrs. Clinton enjoys. Yet, in the case of Mr. Hsu and now Mayor Rivera, the criminal allegations indicate a cost that can come with quickly rounding up political support from far and wide.
The Clinton campaign has severed ties with Mr. Hsu; as for Mayor Rivera, he remains a member of Mrs. Clinton’s Mayors Council as of this afternoon, but a campaign spokesman said that the charges were “serious” and will be monitored closely.
According to the criminal complaint filed in Federal District Court, Mayor Rivera allegedly promised to deliver a majority of votes on the Passaic City Council to steer city insurance brokerage business to a dummy company set up by the F.B.I.
Federal agents posing as company executives offered a $50,000 payment to Mr. Rivera in return for the business, according to the complaint; Mr. Rivera allegedly accepted an initial installment of $5,000.
Mr. Rivera, according to a transcript of secretly recorded conversations laid out in the complaint, boasted profanely of essentially controlling the seven-member city council. He said that securing a four-vote majority would be “easy, easy, easy,” and, at another point, said the deal was as good as done.
“I make the [expletive] decision. And the council. And believe me, I’ve got the four [expletive] votes on the Council. So let’s stop [expletive], and let’s get this thing rolling,” Mr. Rivera said, according to the complaint.
Mr. Rivera is one of about 100 members of Mrs. Clinton’s Mayors Council, which, according to a campaign press release in July, “will advise the campaign on policy and outreach.”
When Mr. Zeff was asked this afternoon about Mr. Rivera’s status with the campaign he replied, “These are serious charges and as the process moves forward we will be monitoring them closely.”
The 11 officials, who also included two Democratic state assemblymen, are scheduled to appear in Federal District Court in Trenton this afternoon

Don't forget this one when pointing fingers about dishonesty!!
Hillary's biggest fundraiser is ARRESTED. This crook also raises funds for other Democrats!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now to those who cannot recall how Bill Clinton sold U.S. ICBM missle technology to the Chinese Government back in 1996, we now get another glimpse of the corrupt and devious Clinton world.
A shady Chinese megadonor to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign has close ties to an aerospace mogul accused of placing his business interests before national security by sharing missile secrets with Beijing during the Clinton administration.
During the last Clinton campaign of 1996, the People's Liberation Army launched a massive campaign to buy influence in the Democratic Party and steer military hardware and technology Beijing's way.
Reports by federal investigators say the PLA used a host of Chinese agents living in the U.S. as bagmen to funnel cash to the Clinton-Gore campaigns and gain access to the White House and sensitive government agencies.
In 1998, in the course of plea bargaining with the Justice Department, a Chinese bagman by the name of Johnny Chung confessed that at least $100,000 of his contributions to the DNC and the Clinton-Gore campaign had come from a Chinese aerospace executive – a lieutenant colonel in the Chinese military – who had given him $300,000. It was the same Chaoying involved with Loral, who happened to also be the daughter of the PLA's top general and a key member of China's Communist Party leadership.
Chung later told prosecutors that the $300,000 had been ordered into his bank account by the head of Chinese military intelligence, whom he said he met through the lieutenant colonel.
During the 1996 election cycle, Chung was a regular White House visitor. All told, he visited 57 times. During one visit to the first lady's office, he handed Hillary Clinton's chief of staff a check for $50,000. Three days earlier, he had received a $150,000 wire transfer from the Bank of China.
Hillary Clinton posed for a White House photo with Chung and two Chinese officials, and later penned a personal note on a print of the photo for Chung: "To Johnny Chung with best wishes and appreciation – Hillary Rodham Clinton."
We now have one MORE of many scandals yet to unfold in the Clinton campaign.
When Norman Hsu turned himself in to authorities yesterday, I'm sure Hillary Clinton wasn't smiling.
Well, Hillary was smiling when this crook gave Hillary $850,000!! (see below how happy Hillary is at this money-launderer)
I doubt that others with Hsu's money in their campaign coffers, like Barack Obama, Bill Richardson, John Kerry, Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer, Mary Landrieu and Al Franken, were happy. Add the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to the list, too.
It's not good to have a campaign donor turn himself in on a grand theft charge, appear in court, be handcuffed, and held on $2 million bail. Then, there's also that annoying FBI investigation into Hsu's campaign donations.

McCain Pushed Land Swap That Benefits Backer
By Matthew Mosk
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, May 9, 2008; Page A01
PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- Sen. John McCain championed legislation that will let an Arizona rancher trade remote grassland and ponderosa pine forest here for acres of valuable federally owned property that is ready for development, a land swap that now stands to directly benefit one of his top presidential campaign fundraisers.
Initially reluctant to support the swap, the Arizona Republican became a key figure in pushing the deal through Congress after the rancher and his partners hired lobbyists that included McCain's 1992 Senate campaign manager, two of his former Senate staff members (one of whom has returned as his chief of staff), and an Arizona insider who was a major McCain donor and is now bundling campaign checks.
When McCain's legislation passed in November 2005, the ranch owner gave the job of building as many as 12,000 homes to SunCor Development, a firm in Tempe, Ariz., run by Steven A. Betts, a longtime McCain supporter who has raised more than $100,000 for the presumptive Republican nominee. Betts said he and McCain never discussed the deal.

A candidate's radical extremist friend
by: Jay Stevens
Mon May 05, 2008 at 11:59:57 AM MDT
A major presidential candidate associates with a supporter who is unapologetic about his past political extremism. The supporter even spent jail time for felonious activities related to his ideology; burgled; planned a murder of a media critic; proposed kidnapping members of opposition movements; advocated killing federal agents; and had as a childhood hero an authoritarian dictator who murdered millions.
Name that candidate! Name that supporter!
John McCain and G. Gordon Liddy!
| Code: |
How close are McCain and Liddy?...In 1998, Liddy's home was the site of a McCain fundraiser. Over the years, he has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns-including $1,000 this year.
Last November, McCain went on his radio show. Liddy greeted him as "an old friend," and McCain sounded like one. "I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family," he gushed. "It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great." |
Does that mean McCain admires the "principles" of domestic terror that G. Gordon Liddy engaged in, back in the 1970s?
I know, stupid question. But as long as the media's asking around after associates of presidential candidates, I guess it's germane somehow... |
