Well call me crazy but if I need to have an operation I sure don't mind having a Dr. that cracked the odd textbook instead of learning by trial and error. I've known a few uneducated people along the way who weren't exactly bastions of common sense and good judgement-if higher education isn't your thing-fine -but it still has a place.

There are so many fields today, like medicine, that simply require years and years of specialized courses just to scratch the surface of the body of knowledge needed to begin working in that field.

Northern Rancher has it correct, but extend that line of thinking also to the scientists, astronauts, engineers, international politicians, etc.

Granted some people become "perpetual students" and never produce anything. But most folks I've met who've slogged through years of studies have put the education to good productive use that has benefitted the community.
