I must be a liberal because I usually side with HMW and Kola, although I'm usually driven crazy by Dis (although I admire her perserverance and often love her citations) but normally I am shocked at the intolerance of some of the conservatives on the board. I'm not talking about abortion or homosexuality per se, those are truly difficult issues but I am shocked at the attitudes that go along with people's private views -- that those who don't hold those exact views are bad people, that there is only ONE way of thinking when in fact they fail to recognize diversity even among conservatives and GOP, that if our president says something we must believe it is the right thing (regardless of his motives or whether his party supports him).
I can want to severely restrict late term pregnancies, support birth control and teenage counseling so as to decrease the need for abortions and still support the right for a woman to choose abortion. As HMW said, legislating against abortion will not decrease abortions, it will discriminate against poor and uneducated women, cause more botched abortions leading to death.
I can't stand the lack of backbone to do anything that shows they REALLY care about innocents -- preventing teenage pregnancy, taking care of abandoned and abused children, taking children away from abusive parents. I can't think of one of the shouters about abortion who spends 1/100th of their time really caring for innocents. Knee jerk is what it is. Easy way to moralize without really helping innocents.
