Palin "bridge to nowhere" line angers many Alaskans

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - It garnered big applause in her first speech as Republican John McCain's vice presidential pick, but Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's assertion that she rejected Congressional funds for the so-called "bridge to nowhere" has upset many Alaskans.

During her first speech after being named as McCain's surprise pick as a running mate, Palin said she had told Congress "'thanks but no thanks' on that bridge to nowhere."

In the city Ketchikan, the planned site of the so-called "Bridge to Nowhere," political leaders of both parties said the claim was false and a betrayal of their community, because she had supported the bridge and the earmark for it secured by Alaska's Congressional delegation during her run for governor.

The bridge, a span from the city to Gravina Island, home to only a few dozen people, secured a $223 million earmark in 2005. The pricey designation raised a furor and critics, including McCain, used the bridge as an example of wasteful federal spending on politicians' pet projects.

When she was running for governor in 2006, Palin said she was insulted by the term "bridge to nowhere," according to Ketchikan Mayor Bob Weinstein, a Democrat, and Mike Elerding, a Republican who was Palin's campaign coordinator in the southeast Alaska city.

"People are learning that she pandered to us by saying, I'm for this' ... and then when she found it was politically advantageous for her nationally, abruptly she starts using the very term that she said was insulting," Weinstein said.

UPDATE: According to the New York Times, the McCain campaign sold out to the Christian conservatives. McCain had wanted to pick Joe Lieberman or Tom Ridge.

But both men favor abortion rights, anathema to the Christian conservatives who make up a crucial base of the Republican Party. As word leaked out that Mr. McCain was seriously considering the men, the campaign was bombarded by outrage from influential conservatives who predicted an explosive floor fight at the convention and vowed rejection of Mr. Ridge or Mr. Lieberman by the delegates.

As a result, Palin wasn’t seriously considered until the last minute, and even the team assigned to vet Palin didn’t arrive until the day before the announcement was made.

Several news papers are now reporting that there is more that will be exposed about Ms Palin in the days to come- that weren't known to McSame because just like Bush- he did a poor job of checking out his appointments...

Some of the sites and TV pundits are now asking the question:

Thomas Eagleton lasted 18 days. Will Sarah Palin break this record?

OT....I think you can stop the negative press.....To be honest,if Obama/biden can not beat NcCain/Palin....Then they do not deserve to be leaders...For Obama to lose the that circus act would be imbarrasing.....Imagine making such an impressive speech that the repubs had to change their whole political direction to combat it....I have nothing against Palin but she is just a sale picth,a hail mary as Steve wrote...imagine being so weak in the candidate for president that you have to now sell the VP candidate.I feel bad for miss Palin,Is she really the best candidate for VP with-in the conservative ranks?Or just a billboard to try and sell votes?

Obama's speech may be known as the most powerful speech ever delievered in American politics.....It forced his opponet to no longer trust in himself and that man's party is now selling the the american public on a VP rather then thier presidental candidate....

Yep-- I just so dislike what Bush/McSame did to this country and the Republican party-- that I enjoy piling it higher...

And from some of these folks comments I can see they're still only getting the info from the Kool Aid cultist group- so like to stick up for the other side....

And Palin doesn't surprise me- the only thing the Repubs in Montana could dig up for a candidate to run against Baucus this year was an 85 year old, half dead old codger that had ran for President before on the Green Party and Parliamentarian tickets Rolling Eyes Wink Laughing Razz

The truth is, if any liberal cares about the truth, is that she was for the bridge initially. That was BEFORE the final tally after revisions came in and they found they were over $300 million short. At that point, how can anybody be for a project when you have to pony up an additional $300 million? That is when she axed the project.

No, she did not refurn the money to Washington because WASHINGTON TOLD ALASKA THAT THEY DIDNT' HAVE TO. Put yourself in her shoes; The feds give you a check for a project that she can't fund and then tells you that you don't have to use the money for that project and that you can keep it. She looks around and sees a long list of things that need done that could use that money. You're going to send the money back?

These damn libs are trying to raise a big stink about Palin doing what any decent governor working for his state would do, yet they won't raise an eyebrow over Obama proposing spending that will break the country in a week? They've got no comment on his vote for infanticide? He's gotten proved to be a novice idiot twice now on foreign relations ( the surge and Georgia) and you don't read a word? It just makes me want to retch.

one time long ago, there was a young man in northeastern MT that was so lazy and couldnt see his feet and couldn't get a job putting together farm machinery at Mr. Swanson's that he became a deputy sherrif. Then low and behold there was no decent competion that he became the sherrif. Now, I see he is the research guru for the "hold my hand out and the gov't will support me" party. I am glad to see the lifetime of driving around in a county vehichle will do for a persons inttelect. And now I am doing the same as he has been to Palin. I appologize for stooping but I just enjoy it like he does. Thank you for your support.
