Jimmys gone tomorrow

the owners of Jimmy ( the 30 year old horse) is going to come and take him to the game farm tomrrow and put him down.
he's such a cool horse we love him.
they offered us another of thier old retired ropers but he likes to play with the dogs so i'll have to think about that.
sad to see him do though.
the dog will really miss him

Is he sick....hurting or crippled up?

If not....then why put him down?

Remember clueless here?!
They said that because he has to have his teeth floated, has some sores in his mouth a abscess on his frog (?)
That no vets will put him to sleep so basically they can’t float his teeth is the biggy from what I understand.

He’s pretty skinny from winter but he’s got most of our property to feed from now ( he’s our lawnmower) so I guess it’s the floating of the teeth.

You (they) should talk to another vet, then. I have NEVER heard
of putting a horse to sleep to float his teeth. He probably needs
more than a simple floating, but it will make one heck of a
difference in his condition if his teeth don't bother him.

And as for being thin, has he ever been fed any Senior feed?
Old horses take a little more maintence, but they DON'T NEED
TO BE SKINNY just because they are old.

AHMEN! That’s kinda what I thought (ya I am clueless)
I lived in TX and bless your heart kills me.
I asked 1 of my other neighbors and they said they do put the horses to sleep to float their teeth up here.
This is her Hubbys horse and I think that since he’s out of town that she can deal with the horse.
I also told her the neighbors mule lived to be 40 (didn’t tell her he was blind) so 30 don’t seem so old.
Who does it the vet?
They had a friend of his come over and look at him and said he has an abscess in his frog.
HOWEVER his wife tried to tell me he had rain rot, and remember I’m CLUELSS and I told her no he didn’t he’s blowin’ his winter coat.
He’s a good pony, he comes when you call him follows me around like 1 of the dogs.
What the heck can I do besides argue with them.?

OK, Here is a picture of one of our old horses--30 years old. This is a big horse. 16-1 hands and 1450 lbs.
He has been on Progressive Nutrition Grass Formula at 2 lbs per day and
1 lb. of Envision Classic. His teeth are no good either, but...with a little maintence he's happy and having a good life.

Jimmy is 16 hands he’s a big guy too but he’s probably a 100 to 150 under weight.
That’s why every spring we ask for a horse or 3 from the neighbors to “mow” or grass.
Again all I feel I can do is disagree with them, I can’t afford a horse they have already offered me another horse and I had to decline.
To have the Ferrier out alone is 100.00 not including the vet etc. this is an expence we cannot incur right now.
I wish we could we back up to 350 acres of riding trails and would LOVE to have a horse.
I know we’re gonna miss Jimmy, he’s a sweet boy.

I'm shedding tears for Jimmy. Today is his last.
At least he won't starve to death...

Horses are certainly VICTIMS of the people who own them.
