Ok, I will come out and say that I'm no rancher, far from it.. but I do ride a horse on occasion, and love to be outdoors, either hiking, hunting or bird spotting.. For a while now, I've been wanting to get a cowboy hat to replace my ugly Tilly that I use to keep cool under the AZ sun, and dry when outside in the occasional rain.
I wanted to get some advise, and looked and looked for on-line info, and there really wasn't much other than store after store selling Stetsons, Resistol, Baily, etc..
I want a top quality hat that will age well and last me a life time (I'm in my mid 30's).. I don't mind spending a lot (Stetson 100X as a limit).
Anyone care to give me some advise?
and.. Why is Beaver so important? How many X's do I need to get a lot of Beaver felt, 10, 20, 30, 100?
Lastly, will I be a "wannabe cowboy" if I wear a western hat, even though I'm no rancher?? Heck, I don't even like most country music recorded after 1970 "Today's Country" ...as an acoustic guitar fan, I do love the older stuff though!
Thanks gents..

| Buy one that feels good when you put it on and that your spouse likes. Who cares what anyone else thinks. Better to be a wannabe than a not at all.

| Mackey hats in Shell Wyoming make a good hat. There are a few traditional type hat makers around, Miles City and Belle Fouche. I guess if money is no object buy the best you can afford as they usually last longer. Beaver seems to be the gold standard.

Good point, but I both love the color, and don't really expect to wear it in very hot weather anyway.. I am thinking about doing the vent holes, I wonder were I can get that done correctly here in Phoenix?
